Professor Bruce Thompson

Prof Bruce Thompson is the newly appointed Head of the Melbourne School of Health Science, University of Melbourne. Prior to this he was Dean, Health Science at Swinburne University and worked as an academic clinical scientist in a number of major teaching hospitals in Melbourne. Prof Thompson is regarded as an international expert on clinical measurement. He is the Immediate Past President of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and Fellow of Australian and New Zealand Society of Respiratory Science, Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and finally Asia Pacific Society of Respirology. He has extensive international reputation across medicine and biomedical engineering. Prof Thompsons efforts to bring non-traditional expertise to biomedicine, using his varied contacts and expertise to build truly cross-disciplinary projects. He also has the proven capacity to ensure the impact of his work goes beyond academia at multiple levels from state government projects, serving on boards of start-ups and ASX listed biotech companies, medical advisory boards of biotech and big pharma, to multiple national/ international media appearances throughout 2020/2021 regarding the impact and treatment of COVID-19.  Prof Thompson’s strengths are his rare combination of experience in computational and experimental clinical physiology, commercial translation, combined with clinical laboratory management and testing, allowing the translation of basic science into routine clinical testing.
